JOB DESCRIPTION: The Law Clerk Attorney plays a crucial role in providing an open,
fair, efficient, and independent system for the advancement of justice under the law.
This is a permanent position to assist all the justices of the Utah Supreme Court on a
rotating basis. This Law Clerk Attorney may manage several assignments from different
chambers at the same time. Work may include conducting in-depth legal research,
preparation for oral argument, and drafting opinions. The Law Clerk Attorney may also
collaborate with other staff for law clerk training, updating law clerk materials, special
events, and other special assignments.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Assist justices with legal research, review of briefs and appellate records, and
other tasks in preparation for oral arguments.
Assist justices with drafting, editing, and finalizing opinions.
Review court opinions and provide editing and citation review with other law
clerks.
Attend oral argument.
Adhere to the Supreme Court’s Style Guide and Law Clerk Handbook.
Collaborate with other permanent staff as needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience as a law clerk in state or federal court.
Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate degree.
Excel in legal research, legal writing, and citation techniques.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google product suite, and Westlaw.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to critically
analyze legal arguments; ability to work independently.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective
working relationships with employees, judicial officers, other agencies, and the
public; and maintain confidential information.
Current licensure to practice law in the United States within 12 months of hire.
SALARY: $42.23 - $53.85
